When Roger Michaelis started at what was then Clark County School Employees Credit Union in 1985, there were 9,500 members, $35 million in assets and a single branch. Now, just over 30 years later as he prepares to officially retire at the end of this month, the iQ Credit Union of today has 67,000 members, assets approaching $1 billion and 14 branches across Southwest Washington.
Members first.
Under Roger’s leadership and guidance, the story of iQ Credit Union is one of growth and success. His efforts to make banking easier for members resulted in a variety of technological firsts. VIP TellerPhone allowed members to access their accounts over the phone. Then came online banking, giving members 24/7 account access from any personal computer. In 1995, iQ became one of the first financial institutions in the area to offer information over the internet. Then came electronic Bill Pay service, smart phone apps and remote deposit. The financial landscape in 2016 is vastly different than when Roger took the helm in 1985, but through it all, his commitment to putting members first has helped set iQ Credit Union apart.
Community involvement.
Roger has also been a stalwart friend of the community, as well, serving on a variety of boards, including March of Dimes Foundation (Oregon Chapter) and Evergreen School District Foundation. Under Roger’s direction, the Credit Union has provided funding to local school district foundations, given more than 65,000 books to local grade school students, and raised over $10 million in support for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
Farewell, not goodbye.
In 2014, Roger received the Northwest Credit Union’s most prestigious accolade, the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is recognized as an outstanding leader, both by the financial industry and the Vancouver community that he, his wife Teresa and daughter Larissa call home. Whether it’s as CEO, colleague or friend, the contributions Roger Michaelis has made to the business and nonprofit communities in our area are significant. While we will miss him dearly, we look forward to hearing about the next chapter in his life. On behalf of everyone at iQ Credit Union, we wish this one-of-a-kind leader the very best.
