We Pacific Northwesterners are proud and resilient. As a community we tend to embody the credit union philosophy of people helping people. We are here for our neighbors, our friends, our community. Here are four community resources that you can take advantage of during these times.
Stay Home, Stay Safe
Governors of Oregon and Washington have issued similar statewide orders attempting to limit the spread of COVID-19. It’s helpful to stay in the loop about what’s happening during this time. For those north of the Columbia River, Clark County has a lot of information about what is going on with the virus in that area. You can find up-to-date statistics, learn how to avoid the virus, and find other available community resources. South of the Columbia River, Multnomah County also has a plethora of information available on how to stay healthy, what “essential” means, or what to do if you are sick.
Staying well fed and healthy
One of the most important things that you can do at any time is to stay well fed and healthy. Whether it’s you and a partner or you and your entire family, you may find yourself with new and unexpected needs. One organization that has modified their operations during the pandemic is the Blanchet House. Within 24 hours of Governor Brown’s Stay at Home Order, this organization began serving 2,000 meals and drinks a day from the front of their operation rather than the normal dine-in method. The Oregon Food Bank also has food available and the Clark County Food Bank has also stepped up. They have numerous pantry sites open and ready to give you the food you need.
Beware of the scammers
It wouldn’t be a worldwide phenomenon without scammers getting in on the action as well, right? Right! Scammers have already been working hard to fool consumers and trying to take advantage of people during times of high stress. This just means that we must be extra careful. Here are some ways to avoid getting scammed and here is a list of known scams. You can even warn others about potential scams by playing a fun game of FTC Scam Bingo and then uploading it on your social media sites with the hashtag #FTCScamBingo. Now go forth and show those scammers who’s really the boss.
Getting around
Transportation providers have been working hard and continuing operations, albeit with some changes. These changes are necessary for the health and well-being of the drivers and passengers in the Pacific Northwest. C-TRAN is operating but asking passengers to board and exit from the rear door, asking passengers to wear a mask or face covering, and limiting the number of passengers allowed on a bus. TriMet is also operating, but with reduced service, and asking no more than 10 to 15 people ride on a bus at any given time so that they can help keep appropriate space between riders. Remember, only use public transportation during this time to access food, medication, or essential employment.
